Brady Bill

On November 20,1993, the Congress passed the Brady Bill. This is the Bill which mandates a 5 day waiting period to check the background of prospective gun buyers. If they are not criminals or mentally unfit and are not considered a threat to society, guns will be sold.

Advocates of the Bill were Mr. & Mrs. Brady. In 1981, Mr. Bill Brady was President Reagan' aide. He was injured by a bullet intended for the President. After the incident, Mrs. Sara Brady made an effort to draft the Bill with Mr. Brady while taking care of him who was permanently paralized on one side. But their effort was in vain for 7 years until November 1993. It is said that, petitions collected in the United States and Japan calling for the removal of handguns from the American family helped make the Bill a reality.
